This project is intended to establish infrastructure at Port Everglades Entrance to facilitate periodic sand bypassing at the inlet which presently is a complete barrier to natural littoral drift along this area of the Broward County shoreline.  The concept of sand bypassing at Port Everglades Entrance for the purpose of providing sand to the shoreline south of the inlet has been considered since the mid-1960’s.  Not until recently, however, has the construction of a sand bypass project been shown to be an economically feasible component of Broward County’s regional beach management program.  Olsen Associates, Inc. is the Engineer-of-Record for the planning, design, permitting, construction and monitoring of a sand bypass project at Port Everglades.  A designed, the project will include the construction of a sand trap, improvements to the Port Everglades north jetty, and accommodation of periodic sand transfer every 2 to 3 years.  To date, OA has completed a detailed feasibility study, performed project permitting and work with Broward County and the local communities to formulate and implementation approach that will provide a functional project while minimizing the effects of project related activities to surrounding communities.  The project is planned for construction in 2012-13.
