Dredging operations for the 2016 beach renourishment project were completed on Friday evening, August 26.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the 67-day dredging work, The R.N. Weeks and B.E. Lindholm hopper dredges delivered 730 loads of sand from the borrow area, totaling over 1,855,000 cubic yards of sand placed along the 8.1-mile length of Gulf of Mexico shoreline at Pensacola Beach.<\/p>\n

By the end of this week, the Contractor, Weeks Marine, Inc., expects to complete beach tilling of the western portion of the beach project (Avenida 10 westward to Park West), and to finish cleanup and demobilization operations.<\/p>\n

In early fall, the newly reconstructed dune features will be further stabilized with salt-tolerant vegetation and sand fencing to promote sand accumulation and dune growth.<\/p>\n

2016 has been a record year for nesting sea turtles, with 36 nests laid along the 8.1-mile length of Pensacola Beach.\u00a0 Some of these nests have begun to hatch and deliver hatchlings to the Gulf. \u00a0These nests have been relocated out of the beach fill areas.\u00a0 Likewise, sea turtles are being relocated from the borrow area waters by a trawling and relocation operation that operates around the clock in front of the hopper dredges.\u00a0 Thus far, the project trawling efforts have safely captured and relocated 99 loggerhead sea turtles, four Kemps Ridley sea turtles, and two Leatherback sea turtles.<\/p>\n
