Project Status Updates

20 November 2024

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District, is preparing to continue beach renourishment operations for the Brevard County, Florida Shore Protection Project in the Mid-Reach segments between December 2024 and April 2025 (Season 2).  The Mid-Reach project will be constructed with truck-haul sand owing to significant damage to the contractor’s dredge experienced in late October.  Additionally, due to the dredge damage it is likely that the South Reach will be renourished in 2025/26 and not this year.

Areas along the northern Mid-Reach were partially filled during Season 1 (January-April 2024).  These areas will be completed during Season 2 in addition to the areas along the southern Mid-Reach not renourished during Season 1.

Construction of the projects, contracted through The Dutra Group, began with renourishment of the Mid-Reach starting in March, 2024 but had to be paused at the end of April due to the start of sea turtle nesting season in Brevard County. During this time, roughly 102,000 cubic yards of sand were placed along the Mid-Reach between the southern border of Patrick Space Force Base and just south of Palm Springs Blvd in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.

All work on the Mid-Reach beach is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025.

The USACE led project is 100% Federally funded with emergency funds in response to Hurricanes Ian and Nicole and is executed in partnership with the non-Federal sponsor, Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department, and their coastal engineering consultant Foth|Olsen.

An updated progress and schedule map is provided below.

Prior Project Status Updates

1 November 2024

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District, is preparing to continue beach renourishment operations for the Brevard County, Florida Shore Protection Project in the Mid-Reach and South Reach segments between November 2024 and April 2025.

Construction of the projects, contracted through The Duta Group, began with renourishment of the Mid-Reach starting in March, 2024 but had to be paused at the end of April due to the start of sea turtle nesting season in Brevard County. During this time, roughly 102,000 cubic yards of sand were placed along the Mid-Reach between the southern border of Patrick Space Force Base and just south of Palm Springs Blvd in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.

During November 2024, work on the beach is anticipated to be limited to reconstructing the sand stockpile at Spessard Holland Beach Park by hydraulically pumping sand obtain from an offshore borrow area known as Canaveral Shoals II with Dutra’s hopper dredge Stuyvesant.

Starting in December, construction of the sand stockpile is expected to be completed after which sand will loaded onto dump trucks and hauled along the A1A Highway to the Mid-Reach project. During the month of December 2024 work in the Mid Reach is expected to be underway in the 1.7 miles of shoreline from Futch Paradise Beach Park south to Flug Ave. Construction of the Mid-Reach is expected to begin at its southernmost point near Flug Avenue in Indialantic, Florida and generally progress north towards the southern border of Patrick Space Force Base. At roughly the same time, construction of the South Reach through direct hydraulic placement of sand from the Stuyvesant onto the beach is expected to start near the north end of Spessard Holland Beach Park and continue generally north until it meets the southern border of the Mid-Reach project.

All work on the beach is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025. To ensure public safety, beach access will be restricted in the active construction zone (typically 500- to 1,500-foot long sections) but will remain open elsewhere along the beach. Sand ramps will be placed over shoreline pipelines along the South Reach approximately every 200 to 300 feet to ease beachgoer access to the water.

26 April 2024

Construction is complete for the spring 2024 season. Construction will recommence in the fall of 2024 and completed by April 2025.

7 March 2024

Construction commenced on March 7, 2024.
