Hilton Head Island: Tidal Channel Relocation Project at Port Royal Plantation

Location: Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Client: Town of Hilton Head Island

Tasks: Planning, Engineering, Permitting, Design and Construction Documents, Construction Review

In 1997, Olsen Associates, Inc. was the Engineer-of-Record for the relocation of a large tidal channel located at the northern end of Hilton Head Island.  This channel had migrated into a highly-developed reach of shorefront and threatened numerous residential properties.  The relocation consisted of dredging a new “pilot” channel through an adjacent shoal feature and using the material to fill the problematic channel area.  The effort included the handling of over 315,000 cubic yards of sand.  The affected shorefront was later renourished with sand from an offshore borrow site.
