Brevard County Mid-Reach Shore Protection Project

Details:

Location: Brevard County, Florida

Client: Brevard County, Natural Resources Mgt. Office

Tasks: Feasibility Study, Engineering Design, Permitting, Environmental Impact Study

Description:

The Mid-Reach coastline of Brevard County comprises 7.8 miles of beach with nearshore rock hardbottom that outcrops immediately below the low tide shoreline.  For this environmentally sensitive area, Olsen Associates, Inc. (OAI) completed a comprehensive assessment of the rock resource and a Feasibility Study for shore protection alternatives (2003) which evolved into a beach/dune restoration project for the shoreline.  This project will be ultimately incorporated to the Brevard County Federal Shore Protection Project (2011).  OAI prepared the design concepts for the project, including stockpiling of offshore sand onto the beach and into an upland dredged material management area for subsequent truck-haul placement to the dunes.  OAI co-designed an innovative 4.8-acre nearshore mitigation reef and monitoring plan for the project, acquired all permits (2009-10), and was the principal author of the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for Corps’ inclusion in its General Re-Evaluation Report for the project.  Project construction is anticipated to occur in 2012.
