The 2021 beach fill construction is complete. Final grading, site clean-up, and surveys are wrapping up. Mangroves and dune vegetation are being installed along the north shoreline of Greer Island and should be complete by this weekend. The North Shore Rd. beach access will re-open on Monday (or earlier). Broadway St. will have reduced public access next week, as Weeks Marine demobilizes.

Weeks Marine is pumping the final load of beach sand today. Site clean-up, surveys, beach tilling, and vegetation planting will occur over the next few days. The North Shore Rd. beach access is currently closed.

Over the weekend, Weeks Marine will be working in the vicinity of North Shore Rd. That beach access will be closed for a few days. The target completion date of the Segment 1 beach fill is September 20th.

Beach fill operations in Segment 1 commenced on Labor Day (September 6th). Weeks Marine is currently working near the Broadway Street access and pumping northward.

Weeks Marine, Inc. and Kelly Brothers, Inc. are preparing for Tropical Depression Fred. Kelly Brothers has completed the southern two rock groin structures at Longbeach. Next week, work will continue on rock groin N-2 on Greer Island. The vegetation debris clearing on Greer Island is mostly complete. The dredge C.R. McCaskill is scheduled to arrive in Longboat Key on August 24th. Beach fill construction along Segment 1 (Greer Island to Broadway St.) will begin later that week.

Preparations continue by Weeks Marine, Inc., to clear dead vegetation along the Greer Island shoreline for the placement of beach fill material beginning in August.  The Weeks Marine 30“ dredge C.R. McCaskill is now scheduled to arrive around August 19th to fill beach segment 1, from Broadway Street up to the north tip of Greer Island.  Due to the needed vegetation clearing, portions of Greer Island will intermittently be closed to the public.

Kelly Brothers, Inc., is currently working on rock groins S-1 and S-2 between North Shore Road and Broadway St.  Work on the two southern structures is anticipated to be complete prior the commencement of beach fill operations.  Kelly Brothers will subsequently move to complete structure N-2 as the beach fill process commences, and then complete structure N-1.

Preparations are underway by Weeks Marine, Inc., along the Greer Island shoreline for the placement of beach fill material beginning in August.  This includes the clearing of dead vegetation from the shoreline fill area to make sure the beach fill is hospitable to sea turtle nesting.  The Weeks Marine 30“ dredge C.R. McCaskill is scheduled to arrive around August 12th to fill beach segment 1, from Broadway Street up to the north tip of Greer Island.  Due to the needed vegetation clearing, portions of Greer Island will be closed to the public.  Additionally, intermittent parking and access closures along the North Shore Road area will be necessary to accommodate this work.

Kelly Brothers, Inc., is currently working on rock groins S-1 and S-2 between North Shore Road and Broadway St.  Work on the structures will continue through the beach fill process.

The Weeks Marine C.R. McCaskill will be coming to Longboat Key in mid-August to fill beach segment 1, from Greer Island to Broadway Street.  The C.R. McCaskill is a 30” cutter suction dredge, comparable to the E.W. Ellefsen that was used for beach segments 2 and 3.  Beginning July 26th, portions of Greer Island will be closed to the public for vegetation debris clearing.  Additionally, intermittent parking and access closures along the North Shore Road area will be necessary to accommodate this work.

Kelly Brothers, Inc., is currently working on two structures simultaneously. They are placing armor stone on the S-1 structure immediately south of the Longbeach seawall and laying the marine mattress foundation for the N-1 structure north of the existing concrete groins.

Weeks Marine is making preparations to return with the dredge to fill the north end of the Key from Broadway Street northward. This will include the clearing of debris and dead vegetation south of the N-3 structure to make way for beach fill sand in that area. Intermittent parking and access closures at the North Shore Road area will be necessary to accommodate this work. Beach fill operations are expected to commence around August 1.

Kelly Brothers, Inc., resumed construction of the rock groins south of North Shore Road after Hurricane Elsa. Work will continue on these structures, including the construction of S-1 and S-2 (see photos tab).

Cottrell Contracting Corp. completed the beach fill in Segment 5 at the south end of the island on July 4th. Beach tilling and demobilization activities are continuing this week.

The Town and all its contractors are watching the development of Tropical Storm Elsa and making storm preparations. On July 4th, Cottrell Contracting completed the beach fill construction along southern Longboat Key.

Rock groin construction is halted until after Elsa passes.

Dredging and beach fill operations are 24/7.  The rock groin work is limited to daylight hours only.

The Town and all its contractors are watching the development of Hurricane Elsa and making storm preparations.

Meanwhile, beach fill construction is progressing along southern Longboat Key. Cottrell Contracting is currently working on the beach fronting the Pierre and Sanctuary Condominiums. Turtle nests along the beach fill area have been marked and set to safely capture and relocate hatchlings when they emerge in the next few weeks.

Kelly Brothers has constructed the offshore heads of the northern structures N-1 and N-2 and are constructing the offshore ends of S-1 and S-2, just north of the Broadway Street access.

Beach fill construction is progressing along southern Longboat Key. Cottrell Contracting is currently working on the beach fronting L’Ambiance Condominium.

Kelly Brothers will wrap up construction on the offshore portion of rock groin N-1 (on Greer Island) this weekend. They will be laying the foundation and placing armor stone for the offshore portions of S-1 and S-2 (by Longbeach) this coming week.

Cottrell Contracting anticipates completing the beach from Longboat Key Club through Sands Point this weekend. They will then begin pumping from L’Ambiance and progress northward.

Kelly Brothers will be placing rock on N-1 (on Greer Island) and laying the foundation for the offshore portion of S-2 (by Longbeach) this week.

On June 6th, Cottrell Contracting began dredging sand from New Pass for placement along southern Longboat Key, from the Sanctuary to Sands Point. Beach work began just south of the L’Ambiance property. Work will progress southward to the terminal structure at New Pass. Once that portion of the beach is complete, the pipeline will be flipped and work will progress northward from the L’Ambiance condominium.

Kelly Brothers has completed the northernmost rock groin N-3 on Greer Island, and the offshore portion of N-2. To take best advantage of the weather conditions, the contractor is now working toward construction of the offshore portions of the remaining three structures (N-1, S-1, & S-2). To that end, they will be placing foundation mattresses offshore for S-2 and placing rock offshore for N-1 this week.

The Weeks Marine dredge E.W. Ellefsen will return to the project area in late July / early August to construct beach segment 1, in the vicinity of the rock groins.

On May 24th, Kelly Brothers completed the northernmost rock groin (N-3) structure on Greer Island. They have started placing marine mattresses for the foundation of the second rock groin structure (N-2).

Weeks Marine has completed Segment 2 of the beach fill, as of May 17th. The dredge will depart for maintenance this week and shall return at the end of July.

Kelly Brothers continues to make progress on the northernmost rock groin structure on Greer Island.

Preparations are underway for the dredging of the New Pass ebb shoal channel, with sand placement along the southern 4,000 ft of Longboat Key. That work is planned to commence shortly after Memorial Day.

Weeks Marine continues to make rapid progress in Segment 2b.  The beach fill will reach the tie-in with Segment 2a today (May 14th), and operations will shift back to Bayfront Park and begin filling northward toward Tiffany Plaza (4300 block of GMD).  Upon completion of Segment 2, the pipe and equipment will be cleared from the beach and the filled areas will be tilled and dressed.  Weeks Marine plans to send the dredge into port for scheduled maintenance before returning mid-summer to complete Segment 1.

Kelly Brothers continues to make progress on the northernmost rock groin structure on Greer Island.

Weeks Marine is progressing rapidly down the beach. Beach fill operations are complete in Segment 2a-South and Segment 3. The contractor expects to complete Segment 2a-North tomorrow and move operations to the next pipeline landing in Segment 2. Once the transition is made, work will progress from Bayfront Park southward (Segment 2b-South).

Beach fill operations along the South Key / Longboat Club Road (Segment 3) were completed on April 23rd. Demobilization and site clean-up in Segment 3 will occur this week.

Weeks Marine has begun placing sand in the area from the Beachcomber to Sunset Beach (Segment 2a-South).

Meanwhile, work continues on the northernmost rock groin structure on Greer Island.

DATE: 19 April 2021

Beach fill operations along Gulfside Road have ended with the completion of dredging at Longboat Pass by Cottrell Contracting Corporation. Demobilization activities will be occurring this week from S. Gulfside Road up to Broadway Street, with occasional brief closures at both locations to haul out equipment and pipe.

Weeks Marine continues placing sand along Segment 3 of the beach fill project at Longboat Club Road. Completion of the Segment 3 fill is expected later this week, after which operations will jump up to the 2nd pipeline landing area at the Bay Isles Road area and initially work southward back toward the Islander Club and Sunset Beach in the southernmost portion of Segment 2.

Meanwhile, work continues on the rock groin structures at the northernmost structure on Greer Island.

Mote Marine Laboratory personnel have begun their daily sea turtle nest monitoring and nest relocation services along all the beach fill segments at Longboat Key. Likewise, shorebird monitoring services are ongoing by personnel from Steve Sauers Environmental Management.

Beach nourishment construction commenced April 10th in Segment 3, along Longboat Club Road. Excavating sand from offshore of Passage Key and transporting that sand to Longboat Key is a complex process that involves a team of vessels. The Dredge E.W. Ellefsen excavates the sand and transfers it to the Weeks 2600 spider barge. The spider barge loads the sand into scow barges for transit to the 320 Unloader, positioned offshore of Longboat Key. Once the scows reach the unloader, sand/water slurry is then pumped to shore through a submerged pipeline. Bulldozers shape the new sand to the design lines and grades. Sand from this borrow area will be placed in Segments 1, 2, and 3.

The Dredge Rockbridge is excavating the remaining sand within the Longboat Pass channel. Beach fill operations along Gulfside Road are expected to wrap up soon.

The rock groin contractor is continuing work on the northernmost structure on Greer Island.

DATE: 6 April 2021

The Dredge E.W. Ellefsen and its accompanying vessels have arrived on site. Preparations are underway to dredge the borrow area located offshore of Passage Key and transport the sand to Longboat Key. Sand from this borrow area will be placed in Segments 1, 2, and 3. Construction will begin at the end of the week in Segment 3, along Longboat Club Road.

Beach fill operations are continuing to progress along Gulfside Road. This sand comes from Longboat Pass via the Dredge Rockbridge.

Meanwhile, construction of the northernmost rock groin on Greer Island is progressing. Crane barges are utilized to transport and place large stone and foundation materials. Work is also occurring on land, in the immediate vicinity of the structure.

Beach fill operations are well underway along the Gulfside Road segment, with the Dredge Rockbridge placing sand dredged from Longboat Pass.  That work will conclude by April 15.

Meanwhile, the installation of foundation mattresses for the rock groins off Greer Island has commenced.  This work is being performed by crane barge just offshore.  Work will soon shift to land and Gulf-based placement, and armor stones for the work should begin to arrive next week.

Lastly, equipment and pipe pieces have begun to arrive for the installation of submerged pipeline for beach nourishment along Longboat Club Road, scheduled to commence in the next two weeks (approx.)

Things are beginning to happen on the island for the 2021 beach nourishment and North End stabilization Project at Longboat Key.  The Town kicked off the work last week with the initial placement of foundation mattresses for the rock groins being installed off Greer Island, and the Contractors for the various phases of work are in the process of mobilizing equipment to the Broadway Street, Gulfside Road, and St. Regis locations to commence construction of beach nourishment segments in those areas.

This week, the Town expects Contractors to begin laying submerged pipelines from both Longboat Pass and from the offshore area off Longboat Club Road.  Beach fill operations in those areas will commence in the coming 1-2 weeks.

GREETINGS!

The Town of Longboat Key has recently commenced work on the 2021 renourishment of several segments of the island’s Gulf of Mexico shoreline.  Multiple contractors are now in place to perform the numerous segments of construction.  The dredge currently working in Longboat Pass for Coquina Beach will soon shift operations and begin sand placement along the Gulfside Road area.  By mid-April, a separate dredge operation will commence sand placement along Longboat Club Rd south of the St. Regis property.  Concurrently, work will begin this week to construct five (5) low-crested permeable rock groins along the shoreline at North Shore Road and Greer Island.  In total, the Town plans to place roughly 825,000 cubic yards of sand along the Longboat Key shoreline this spring/summer, and to stabilize the north tip of the island to combat the severe erosion that threatens Greer Island.
